I have some antique jewelry and accessories I have questions about but I’m not sure there is a specific category I should list my questions under in Yahoo! Answers. I’ve browsed through Arts & Humanity as well as Society & Culture and their subcategories are kind of vague. Any suggestions?

Collecting antiques is an expensive, but exhilarating hobby. Antique collectors explore the Net in search of antique items, regularly visit antique stores and read the ads of public auctions. Antique Roman and Hellenistic items, different items of Asia and China draw the attention of private collectors worldwide. Antiques websites inform the collectors about the news in the antique business, which gives them the opportunity to check and verify the latest discoveries and special offers.

There are numerous ways to collect antiques. Some people collect items of specific country or historical period. Others choose antiques of a specific origin or related to a certain tradition. For instance, some people collect armor and store at their homes Antique swords and daggers from foreign countries. Others choose to collect works of art, antique figurines, statues and drawings. Collectors often search for items from one particular country or region, such as ancient Byzantine or ancient Jewish figures. In other cases collectors search for figures of specific material and look for ancient glass or ancient oil lamps.

Some items of antique origin can be adapted for everyday use, while others are bought exclusively for aesthetic purposes. For instance, antique table clocks, antique mapping rings and wrist watches can be put to use in our days. Other items, such as African masks or antiques statues, are not used but put in a special place so that they should serve a part of the owner’s collection and make his life happier.

Large sums of money are offered sometimes for original ancient charms and amulets, for clay antiques and other interesting items. These remnants of the past continue to represent our history and the history of the people we choose to explore, and the monetary value of such items sometimes means less than the cultural, aesthetic and historical value.

Many of us share a love for Old World tradition and the classic elegance to be found in a fine piece of English or Continental antique furniture, but few of us can afford the four or five figure price tag that comes with the genuine article. Fortunately there is a solution. Antique reproduction furniture can provide the same look and feel at a fraction of the cost. In fact, you can enjoy a high quality reproduction of an antique item that could otherwise only be found in a museum or royal palace for little more than you would pay for the typical contemporary mass-produced item of the High Street.

From the traditional old English designs of the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian Eras to the unparalleled opulence of the court of Louis XV and the French Empire, the timeless designs of the Old World offer inspiration to a wide array of tastes.

Apart from furniture, high quality antique reproductions can bring a variety of practical as well as decorative treasures to life. With fine porcelain, glassware, silver and silver plate wares, bronzes, clocks, and a wide range of other unique antique decorative pieces often carrying price tags as high as those on furniture, reproductions of these kinds of items can as well bring enjoyment and splendour without breaking the bank.

Find an established specialist who deals in both antique as well as reproduction items that understands the difference between the two and represents them accurately. Use of the terms “style” or “in the manner of” generally mean that the item is a contemporary or vintage reproduction. The terms “antique,” “period,” and “circa” will usually mean that the piece is original to the historical era mentioned – and much more expensive!

I will be decorating my “modern” house with a Victorian theme . My friends are helping by giving me old things that I adore. I was wondering where can I research how to find out if some of my things are just old or possibly antiques ? I have a lot of things being given to me that I know are old but I would like to find out if the have antique value to them. Ex: chandeliers, jewelery boxes, lamps ect.

I don’t want to lessen the value of anything if they are worth something. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hearing the word “antique” will evoke images of the past where life is simpler although a lot slower. Considered to be valuable evidences of long gone eras and epochs, antiques are collected all over the world. These antiques may prove to be remnants of a great empire or simple heirlooms passed on from generation to generation. Whatever it may be, the histories that they inevitably carry are priceless.

In museums, many antiques attract visitors from all over the world. They simply have to see for themselves that the stories in the books are real. Antiques help authenticate these stories. Collected from archaeological sites or even from dusty attics and basements, these antiques are known to stand the test of time. As sources of secrets, antiques can hold many un-deciphered codes hidden in its details.

Many people showcase their prized antiques in their homes. Often protected from heat and moisture, these items are usually encased in glass cabinets. Antique collectors usually collect them according to time or material. For example, a person can collect table, chairs and beds all made from real mahogany. This is how antiques figure in the area of interior design. Choosing antique furniture not only guarantees durability but excellent craftsmanship as well. These antique furniture become points of interest in any room in the house. Another reason for them to be highly revered is the anecdotes attached to them. This could guarantee a long evening of intellectual discussions and mental stimulation.

If you are convinced that an antique will complete the personality of your home, then you\’re in for a real adventure. Finding particular antiques can be quite difficult. Fortunately, the internet can be a great source of information. Many sites feature antiques that originated from different parts of the world. Some antiques are quite expensive while others are priced a little more reasonable. Since most antiques are considered investments, you can choose one that has a high market value. This will be practical in the long run when its price doubles or even triples. Just make sure that you can authenticate them with the aid of professional collectors or historians.
