An antique auction is an auction where the things sold are very old. Usually, antique auctions sell things that other collectors have offered or they sell antiques that people have left behind after they died. Whatever the reason, there are many great deals to be had at an antique auction.
Antique auctions may be a little hard to find. You can check your local newspaper or call the local antique dealer. Either one of those sources should turn up an antique auction near you. The people that attend these auctions are antique dealers, private dealers as well as hobbyists who just like to buy things that catch their eye.
You can even find antique auctions online. Sites like Ebay are perfect for finding great deals on antique items. Antique auction sites allow you to bid while providing pictures that you can look at so that you can see exactly what shape the item is in before you bid on it.
The best thing about an antique auction is that you can get great deals on items that have endured many, many years for sometimes pennies on the dollar. Depending on how many people are participating in the auction, you could get an antique item that’s much more expensive than what you paid for it. That’s why going to every antique auction around you can really pay off.
Auction Your Own Items
If you, too, have items that you’d like to get rid of to make room for something else, you can even offer your items to the antique auction. If you offer it to an antique house, they will likely receive a commission for allowing your item to go up for bids. If, however, you choose to auction the item off yourself, say on an auction site, you may have to pay a small fee to include it in the listing but all profits will be yours. Depending on the item, there’s no limit to what someone will pay. Sometimes, something you see as worthless can mean thousands or more to someone else.
Whether you’re a collector, a dealer or just a hobbyist, looking for that certain piece to add to your collection, try an antique auction near you. You’ll be surprised at the deals you can find and you’ll complete your set in no time. Or, if it’s you who is holding the auction, think of all the money you can make to help someone fill up their antique collection.

Mr. Joe in Texas, you didn’t answer the question. It was not an insult, things get better with age right? Of course until the age ends, and you have a hockey mom in the white house. Good luck with those presidential addresses.

Peter Green asked:
Knowledgeable antique dealers are frequently asked “How did you learn all the things you know about antiques?” The simple answer given by most is, “Many, many years of experience and constant never-ending study, study, study.”
During the 1960s antiques began to emerge from the part-time, side-door curio shop, to a more mainstream full-time business, incorporating dealers, pickers, and some franchised stores.
Today antiques represent a multi-billion dollar industry supported by a variety of enterprises from the small one-owner shop to the largest metropolitan auction homes, including the latest marketing concept - the online antique mall.
Today’s collector finds himself with more leisure time to search for, and more “spendable” income to pay for, antiques and collectibles. This combination of more time and extra money naturally makes the collector want to know more about either his particular field of interest or, as is the case with most antique enthusiasts, more about antiques in general.
Far-sighted entrepreneurs are never far behind when a need arises, and the desire for more knowledge about antiques and collectibles was no exception. Some 35 years ago correspondence courses began to appear, and offered for those fostering the dream of one day being a part of the antique marketplace, an opportunity to study antiques in a proper comprehensive manner.
As with any other area of correspondence study, one must be self-disciplined enough to follow through and complete the prescribed home study in a timely manner for it to be effective.
And, like all education, the information and knowledge gained must be applied in the “real world” and used on a regular basis. To read about Georgian furniture for example but never to go to a museum or other exhibit and personally examine the exquisite craftsmanship cannot possibly make one an expert on the subject.
Today’s business world actually offers many opportunities undreamed of a generation ago. Not only well-paid jobs with long-established firms, but also interesting professions away from the normal routine, and antiques is one of those professions.
For those wishing to pursue home-study training in antiques for either professional or personal use there are courses available from various sources. Individuals considering the
possibility of home-study should investigate the material offered by the company and satisfy themselves that it will meet their needs.
One such company offering a complete and thorough home-study training program in antiques is the Asheford Institute of Antiques. For a free information package concerning their course, you can write to them at 131 Bloor St. W., Suite 200, Dept. 124, Toronto, Ontario M5A 1RS, or if you wish to write them in the U.S. they can be reached at 981 Harbor Blvd. Ste. 3, Dept. 275, Destin, Florida 32541. (Tel. 877 444-4508) www.asheford.com
I have included with this article a condensed outline of subjects covered in the Asheford Institute of Antiques course. Some of the titles include:
Furniture Periods, Types of Classical Styles, Care and Restoration of Antiques, Tools and Materials, Finishing Materials, How the Antique Business Works, Houses and Restorations, Victorian Furniture and Early American Furniture, History of Styles, How to Sell Antiques, Rough and Smooth Styles, Pricing, Catalogues, Consignment Pricing, Hardware, How to Remove Old Paint and Varnish, Decorating with Stencils, Repairing Springs and Recovering Furniture, Curtain Styles and Fabrics, Rugs and Wallpapers, How to Create New Finishes (this is only a very partial list).
I think it is worth mentioning in closing that upon the successful completion of the training program the student is awarded a diploma and a full certification in professional appraising. So, if you have the necessary interest and time, it might be worth a try.
See you next week.

Benedict Smythe asked:
The aesthetic value of antique furniture pieces is one of the reasons why many antique collectors prefer these items. There is a wide variety of styles and era to choose from. Antique collectors have, in some ways, mastered the skills in knowing what a good buy is, but as novice, you may need more time and experience.
If you plan to buy antique furniture piece to add glamour to your home, be on the lookout for reproductions. The following helpful information will guide you on the basics of buying authentic and practical antique furniture.
Observe the dimensions. Authentic antique furniture does not have uniform dimensions since wood, which most antique furniture are made of, shrinks with age. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility that what you are eyeing for is not genuine at all. To clearly see the various angles of furniture, take the time to view it in broad daylight.
Test the solidity of the item. Antique furniture has no real value if it loses its functionality. What use is an authentic antique chair when you cannot actually sit on it? Antique shops allow buyers to sit or move items for verification. Antique experts also suggest this method.
Make sure that parts are available. Good quality antique furniture has complete functional or decorative parts as well.
Look for proof of antiquity. Since the age of an antique is one of the major determinants of authenticity, you should have the assurance that the item for sale passed the age definition of an antique which is at least a hundred years old. One way to verify this is to look for signs of depreciation in the item such as dust accumulation in its corners which are hard to reach by regular dusting. If these simple signs are not available, experts say, the item might not be as old as an antique should be. You must also consider whether a piece of furniture has been restored or refinished. Restoration on antique pieces may decrease the value of the item especially if done poorly.
Examine the surface colour. The surface finish of a piece of antique furniture is also a significant detail to observe. A quality piece of antique furniture should show flat colouring except for some shades which might have naturally occur due to age. The back side of a piece may differ in appearance with the surface but it should have unvaried shades as well.
Interview the antique shop owner. You will get more details through a one on one interview with the shop owner. Ask about the era and style of the furniture which you may later research on to be more familiar with the item. You may also request for a warranty of the item.
Consider antique restoration. While some would no longer consider unstable antique furniture, you may choose to have the item restored to its former glory through the help of a professional antique restorer.
Antique restoration is the art of restoring an antique to its natural appearance with the purpose of making it appear new. In some cases, antique restoration refers to the process of restoring an antique for preservation or conservation of its features to avoid more wear and tear.
Get a second opinion. If you are hesitant about the value of your target antique piece of furniture, you may hire the expertise of antique experts. What’s more, you may also have the furniture appraised to determine its actual value.

The antique brass hardware is increasingly getting important in the market. They are currently being used in large quantities in both the commercial and the residential projects. Most of the buyers have their likings of antique hardware in brass, wrought iron and cast iron. The reason behind this is the excellent polish, looks and most importantly, the durability they give to the product. Many countries manufacture carved and embossed antiques and export it all over the world. India is considered one of the leading exporters of antique finish brass hardware.
The category of the antique hardware includes the following items; antique door bolts, antique door knobs, antique keyhole covers, antique shelf brackets, antique latches, antique locks, ntique door hinges, antique gate hinges, antique railings, antique pewter among many others.
Antiques make up for a variety of articles. Furniture is a very important one of them. It includes tables, chairs, sofas, bureaus, chests, desks and many more such items. These items are from different types of wood namely, mahogany, oak, pine, walnut and rosewood. A number of styles and patterns of such furniture can be found.
Antique brass hardware needs to be taken care off in many aspects, to maintain its originality. If polishing is required to be done, then it is manually done by hand. Use of modern paste-type polish with micro abrasives should be considered. Care should be taken while polishing the brass edges and it should not be done if the surrounding wood is not protected.
To protect the wood’s furniture applying a light coat of wax around the perimeters of the brasses will help protect it during the brass polishing. Alternatively, another thing can be done is inserting an index card between brass and the wood. Each brass fitting could be removed individually, fitted, polished and then put back in its original position. This process can be followed for the entire brass fitting one by one.
Cleaning of the material consist of use of isopropyl with sponge. For heavier soils, dampen the sponge a bit with water and apply a scouring low abrasion cr? of less potency onto it. Once the surface is cleaned, the job of polishing can be commenced. A yellow treated dust cloth gives releases the exact quantity of oil onto the metal. The brass will look brighter and its body will shine if it is rubbed with cloth moistened with olive oil. Olive oil helps in retarding the tarnish and less polishing is required.
A weekly wiping with a little liquid ammonia on a soft cloth will help keep unlacquered brass shiny. To polish antique brass hardware pieces, wash it in hot soapy water to remove the grime and wax.. Later on, rinse it and dry. Use boiled linseed oil to moisten a cloth to polish the brass surface until all the grease and dirt have been gotten rid of.
Thus, the antique brass hardware is a good collection to boast off, and it serves as one of the good ways to invest. To deal with all such antique related buying and selling many websites and dealers are available who can help you out in carrying out the transaction.
