There is nothing like the polished sheen on antique wood, lovingly polished with       bee’s wax for the past hundred, or even, the past two hundred years.  Over this long period of time a rich patination is left, the fine sheen of polished wood. This patina can never be successfully reproduced and is the result of elbow grease, wax and time!

Treen is a generic name for the small to medium, functional handmade objects made of wood.  Hence treen is distinct from furniture, chairs, tables etc.

The very word is antique! and is, in fact, a Middle English word from the 13th century, when treen meant tree, or wood.  The word is still in common use to describe small objects made in hand turned wood.  Wood, of course, being the major raw material for common domestic objects with turning and carving being the key skills.

Some rare examples of treen exist from the 15th century with most antique pieces being made in the 19th century.  These were made prior to the introduction of cheap metal wares and finally, plastics.  As the 19th century progressed, the “old fashioned” treen pieces were discarded for the new wares.

The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co illustrate a very handsome, mid 19th century, English, urn shaped, fruit wood lamp.  The lamp on a short socle and standing on a circular base, the fruit wood, probably cherry wood.  The lamp fitted with a gold plated bronze cap.  This impressive lamp base with a height of 11”/ 28cm and a circumference of 21”/53cm, has been hand turned from a single length of fruit wood!  Circa 1850.  Overall height (including shade) 23″/58.5cm.

The lamp with a highly polished surface, the end result of a soft cloth and wax for the past 150 years.  The lamp is, of course highly functional, with a clean undecorated form, greatly admired by designers and collectors.

It is well worth recalling that antique pieces were made by master craftsmen and that in today’s world, hand crafted products like these have virtually disappeared.

Antique pieces not only reflect quality workmanship from an earlier time, but will increase in value, while a contemporary piece will depreciate every year.

There is a real pleasure in owning something that is unique and beautiful while remaining a useful asset to a family.  Antique pieces, such as table lamps, can do a lot for a modern interior, adding a much warmer element when integrated into a décor.  It is quite often a surprise to discover just how “at home” an antique piece can look in a modern interior.

The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co specialise in antique table lamp lighting with an on-line range of over 100 unique, antique and vintage lamps on view.

Lamps are shipped ready wired for the U.S, the U.K and Australia.

Victor Epand asked:

Antique lamps are a special medium through which you can bring light and history into your home. There are several different kinds of antique lamps that you can choose from. As a part of your home decor, antique lamps can serve the function of bringing light, as well as adding class and style to your home.

Antique kerosene lamps are wonderful for decorating your kitchen, especially if you have a country style design. You can put them on your desk or hang one up in the bathroom. They are great for the front porch or to light up the back yard as well. The flicker of a flame adds to the beauty of an antique kerosene lamp, which makes it an excellent choice. These days, this type of lamp is primarily used for camping trips, and you can certainly use it for that. It is nice to add it to your home, however.

If you prefer another style of antique lamp, try an antique piano lamp. They can be clipped onto things like a desk and used as a reading lamp or they can light up a framed picture on a shelf or the fireplace mantel. Piano lamps can be used in the hallway or in the kitchen. The style permits antique piano lamps to be a part of just about any room of your house.

For those looking for something a little bit larger, and antique floor lamp might serve the purpose. Antique floor lamps are tall and slender. They are usually designed with special lamp shades of colored glass, frills, and brass stands. They can light up a corner, or the whole room. Antique floor lamps certainly command attention in whatever room they are in. They go best in living rooms, family rooms, dens, and hallways. It is nice to sit on an easy chair and read under an antique floor lamp.

There are many more types, sizes and styles of antique lamps, including antique crystal lamps, antique bridge lamps, and antique oil lamps. Each type has its own special features. It is all up to you how much you would like to spend on your antique lamp. Determine your budget, think about where you will put the lamp, and consider what you will use the lamp for. Once you have a good idea about these things, you can go ahead an shop for your very own antique lamp.

Antiques are those items, which show some degree of craftsmanship, or a certain attention to design. They can be bought from antique shops, or passed down as an estate. Some valuable antiques can be bought from antique dealers and auction services or purchased online through websites and online auctions. There are a number of different styles of antique furniture depending on when and where it was made. Three areas need to be considered when caring for antiques: proper cleaning, proper protection and maintaining a proper environment

Antique furniture such as dining tables, chairs, bureaus, chests etc requires huge investments and maintenance. Regarding dust, if it is allowed to remain on the surface of your antiques, it can actually damage the finish of wood, brass and other surfaces. Therefore, it is critical to make dusting a part of your weekly routine. You should dust every few days, and at the very least, once a week. How often you dust may also depend on your environment and location.

When dusting, it is important to “do no harm”. Use only a soft cloth, and avoid sprays of any type, including furniture polish. Never dust with anything that may scratch the finish of your furniture, whether a dusting or cleaning compound or cloth that may have abrasive properties. The chemicals used in many of these products that are designed to repel dust and dirt may cause a weakening of the antique’s finish or even stain the wood. Remember, cleaning should protect and preserve your pieces, not cause damage. When it comes to caring for antique furniture, dust, direct sunlight and improper environment are furniture’s worst enemies.

No matter how good one’s intentions may be, efforts to clean antique furniture, if done improperly, may actually do damage.

Today people like to visit forums for getting a general idea of the item’s worth. It is common to find a lot of conflicting information using this approach. Forums may be great for building a sense of community and for getting some strong ideas.

Many websites are available nowadays that portrays information about antique furniture manufacturers and suppliers information. It has become quite tough to choose the best out of the huge lot. Craft Central is a marketplace with offers you a wide range of directory, thus making it easy for buyers to make up their mind.

Craft central is a reliable information source and a B2B matchmaking platform of global manufacturers, suppliers, traders and buyers related to art, craft and handicraft industry.

Maurice Robertson asked:

An antique is not held to be an antique until it’s had its 100th birthday.  It’s this centenary that gives it the title “antique”.  However, it is not just the age of the object that classifies its value.

By example, a little Roman oil lamp in original condition can be purchased for a very small price, although the lamp was made in some provincial Roman pottery in the year A.D 100.  The reason is that these little oil burning, pottery lamps were made by the thousand, lamps of this style being the standard throughout the vast Roman Empire.  Even with losses through breakage and damage over the past 2000 years, very large numbers are still available for a small price today.

Availability and condition are two major factors which influence the value of antique lighting, in fact, all art and antiques are subject to this rule.

Other influencing factors are –

The aesthetic value, i.e. “the look of the lamp”

The functional value as a source of lighting

The complimentary value to the interior

The rarity of the lamp

If it were produced by a famous maker

The provenance of the lamp

The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co understand these combined factors and, in fact, include many more in offering their range of antique and vintage lamps.  Not generally understood is that the careful restoration of an antique lamp, can be, and mostly is, an expensive exercise, with the input of fine metal turners, wood turners, gold platers, water gilders, polishers, electricians etc.

A good antique lamp combines two principal factors, form and function, with the leading factor being function ie to provide satisfactory interior lighting.  Besides being a functional light however, it also offers a constant visual pleasure.  It is well worth noting, that a fine quality antique lamp is not just a light!  It can and does offer a lot more as an investment, not only from a monitory point of view, but also as an investment in our quality of life.

Jhoana Cooper asked:

Antiques represent the glorious past and evolution of human society and culture. An Antique can also represent an amalgam of different cultures and it makes the item more priceless. Antiques are usually items, which have a certain level of craftsmanship, or attention to design, such as an office desk, a chair, a cast iron lamppost, a painting, a sketch or drawing, or even an automobile. Antiques can be bought at antique shops, and some items like Antique Furniture are also passed down in the family as part of an estate or as an heirloom. Many valuable antiques can also be bought from antique dealers or auction services or can be purchased online through websites and online auctions.

Many antique dealers have their area of specializations and deal in only certain items, such as paintings or Art Deco items, while others will deal in all types of antiques. Auction houses too may specialize in certain antique items, items that have higher value, or items from a particular era, country, or style, such as Antique Furniture from the Victorian era or paintings and statues by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Websites and online auctions may deal in all types of antiques from 50 to 5000 years old. Although purists do not consider items less than 100 years old as antiques, such as Art Deco items from the 1920s to 1950s, passionate collectors still consider them as antiques, and treasure and cherish them as mementos of a bygone era.

Art Deco was a very popular design movement, which started in 1925 and lasted till 1939. It was an international movement and affected many art forms including the architecture of the time, interior design styles, industrial designs, fashion styles, paintings, film and graphic arts. The movement was an amalgam of different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Constructivism, Neoclassical, Modernism, Cubism, Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, and Futurism. The Art Deco movement’s popularity was at its peak in Europe during the 1920s and it continued in the United States through the 1930s. Art Deco was purely decorative, and this style was considered elegant, modern, and functional. Although the movement fizzled out by the 1940s, the items created during that time are cherished and considered as collectibles. In a few decades more, these Art Deco items will be considered as antiques from a bygone era and century and will be valuable and priceless.

Collecting antiques is a passion and many passionate antique collectors have their favorites. Some antique lovers may collect antique candle stands, while others are more interested in Antique Furniture. While some may collect Antique Furniture from China and Asia, others are more interested in antiques from the Victorian and Elizabethan eras, and yet others are interested only in antique jewellery or books. Many collectors are also interested in items from more modern times and consider these items as antiques or vintages and priceless collectibles to be cherished and passed on to their children. Some people buy antiques as an investment and resell the items for monitory gain a few years later. The true collector is only interested in collecting an antique for its uniqueness and not for its monitory value. Whatever the reason for buying antiques, it is always an Object of desire and everyone wishes to own an antique - at least one.
